The Great Southern BioBlitz 2025 is on Oct 24–27! Join us in recording plants, animals, fungi, and more across the Capertee Valley and beyond. Every observation helps showcase and protect our biodiversity. Full details
The Great Southern BioBlitz (GSB) is back for 2025! This global citizen science project invites communities across the Southern Hemisphere to record as many species as possible during Spring – showcasing our incredible biodiversity to the world. The Capertee Valley is one of the most biodiverse regions in NSW, home to unique plants, birds, and wildlife. Because of its remoteness, every observation counts, and that’s where you come in. By joining the BioBlitz, you’ll be adding valuable on-the-ground data that helps with species mapping, conservation, and understanding the health of our ecosystems.
How to get involved:
Download the free iNaturalist app (App Store or Google Play). Don't have a smartphone? No worries, you can add your observations on the iNaturalist Desktop website. Between October 24th and 27th, upload your wildlife, insect, plant or fungi sightings from anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere.
Observations can be made from your own backyard, while travelling, or on a bushwalk – every record helps! You can even add observations if you don't have phone reception. Just make sure you have the app downloaded and are logged in with the steps below before you leave the signal. No experience is needed, and you don’t need to be an expert – iNaturalist’s community will help with species identification.
Step 1: Make sure the iNaturalist App is on your phone, set up your own account! You can search for iNaturalist in the Play Store or App Store on your phone
Step 2: Once you're signed in, find the 'Projects' tab, and search for 'Central Tablelands' and click on the one that says 'Great Southern Bioblitz 2025: Central Tablelands'
Step 3: Select the button that says 'Join'
Step 4: Now that you have joined the project, you can start making entries. To create a new entry, press the + button in the bottom right corner in 'My Observations'
Step 5: You can upload your images and fill in the fields with your observations, including what you think it is and where you observed it (turn on location). At the bottom, make sure you select> Add to projects> Great Southern Bioblitz 2025: Central Tablelands to make sure it's added to the Bioblitz observations list.
By participating, you’ll contribute to global science while discovering more about the natural world right here in the Capertee Valley. Join Capertee Valley Landcare and the Central Tablelands Landcare Network in putting our valley’s biodiversity on the map!
